Hop, Step, Jump For Spring Anime!

Before I begin with this entry proper, I’d like to comment that I’ve spent days thinking about what feature month is going to be like, and have thought up numerous ideas, but it seems none of the ideas really leave me with a Eureka I’m going to do this feeling. Therefore, there’s a high likelihood that till I meet inspiration, feature month may become much simpler than it’s hyped up to be. Then again, anything can change at the last minute!

I realise that now is a perfect time to look at the final line-up for spring anime, since the April-to-June anime season is kickstarting and some of the anime are starting with their first episodes to entice everybody. I shall pick out anime that seem interesting to me and talk about them.

1. Karneval

I’m not sure just what about Karneval attracts me, but it just looks like it could be a money-making venture for the company. Karneval seems to have acceptable art, a wide-eyed white-haired bishounen (which seems to be a standard for anime nowadays, after K did it with roaring success). It’s classified as a josei manga, which means it appeals particularly to women. The story seems to be about a person who searches for someone important to him, and a pickpocket, who both are set up to become wanted criminals tracked by a defence organisation who uses a special type of bracelet to fight and put up carnivals after their raids to apologise for scaring the citizens. This sounds cheesy but I hope it isn’t. But I’m sure bracelets will play a vital role in this storyline.

Studio: Manglobe

Air Date: 3rd April

Notable Voices: Shimono Hiro, Kamiya Hiroshi, Miyano Mamoru, Ono Daisuke

2. Shingeki no Kyojin

I think it must be because I’m watching Fate/Zero now that I suddenly get attracted to dark anime. Last season I’m sure I was more light-hearted. In any case, Shingeki no Kyojin looks dusty, cloudy and the primary colours in the show are brown and black, from what I can see. So this city suddenly had Titans, who are giants who eat humans for no reason (and not Teen Titans), and so the humans surround themselves with enormous walls. Our 2 characters are not-blood-related siblings again, whose lives are changed after a Titan destroyed their home and killed their mother.

Studio: Wit Studio of Production IG

Air Date: 7th April

Notable Voices: Kaji Yuki, Inoue Marina, Taniyama Kishou, Shimono Hiro, Kobayashi Yuu, Kamiya Hiroshi

3. Dansai Bunri no Crime Edge

This anime has the honour of being awarded “Cool But Anticlimactic Title”. I thought it’d be about crime but no, it’s a pair of scissors named Crime Edge! Wtf! So basically it’s about this boy with an obsession for cutting people’s hair, and a girl who can’t cut her hair because of a curse. His scissors, named Dansai Bunri no Crime Edge, can cut her hair, but doing so sparked off an old killing game where people use “killing goods” to kill the girl. So he must protect her. Yeah, this all stemmed from a haircut.

Studio: Studio Gokumi

Air Date: 4th April

Notable Voices: Hikasa Youko, Nakamura Yuichi

4. Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2199

Another bleak anime. This one may be known to some for the live action movie starring Kimura Takuya, and has now been remade. Basically Earth has become a radioactive desert wasteland attacked constantly by aliens. But a sociable alien race sends them a blueprint to construct a spacecraft that can retrieve the device to clean up the planet but humanity has only a year before they die off.

Studio: Xebec and AIC

Air Date: 7th April

Notable Voices: Ono Daisuke, Suzumura Kenichi, Hirakawa Daisuke, Tanaka Rie, Satou Rina

5. RDG Red Data Girl

The story’s about a teenage girl who grew up in a shrine which happens to be a World Heritage Site. She destroys any electrical device she comes into contact with. She goes to the city to study and finds out that she is actually a vessel for a shinto spirit and her male friend is a yamabushi who’s supposed to protect her.

Studio: P A Works

Air Date: 4th April

Notable Voices: Fukuyama Jun, Inoue Kazuhiko, Kugimiya Rie, Kimura Ryouhei, Ishida Akira

6. Kakumeiki Valvrave

I hate when the Japanese use too many “v”s in a name. They obviously can’t pronounce them. In any case, Valvrave seems to be the “commercial” anime of the season. Basically people live in space now and a high school student discovers a mysterious mecha. Nothing much more is said, and nothing much more has to be said.

Studio: Sunrise

Air Date: 12th April

Notable Voices: Kimura Ryouhei, Seto Asami, Tomatsu Haruka, Kayano Ai, Yoshino Hiroyuki, Nakamura Yuichi, Namikawa Daisuke, Yuuki Aoi, Horie Yui, Fukuyama Jun, Miyano Mamoru, Kaji Yuuki, Ono Daisuke, Mizuki Nana

In short, everyone wants to be in on the fun.

7. Hataraku Maou-sama!

This sounds funny. A Devil King is banished to Tokyo and must work as a freeter to pay for his living expenses because nobody cares about “conquering the world” in this era!

Studio: White Fox

Air Date: 4th April

Notable Voices: Hikasa Youko, Touyama Nao, Shimono Hiro

There’re a few more gems in there, such as more bleak anime series and some comedy-looking things, and plenty of female action for people of that orientation. However, there isn’t time for me to cover everything and these are the ones I (and a few others) are looking forward to. Hope you have fun watching the anime!
